Luxury Birdhouse at Son’s Geronimo

Luxury Birdhouse at Son’s Geronimo

As we’ve mentioned before, we’ve decided to make our travel a little more adventurous by staying in more unique locations this year. So, when Son’s properties reached out to us and invited us to check out some of their properties, it was the perfect opportunity! If you missed it, we visited Son’s River Ranch for our goddaughter’s birthday last summer. We rented a cabana and spent the day grilling out at the cabana and tubing the San Marcos River. Check out that vlog here!

Son’s geronimo offered the ultimate glamping experience! The birdhouse cabin where we stayed included 2 queen beds, 2 daybeds, a full-sized bathroom, a kitchen/dining area, and a large patio that overlooked the Geronimo Creek. Each cabin also includes 2 BBQ grills and a fire pit. When we weren’t relaxing in the cabin, there was so much to do on the property. The amenities included 2 swimming pools, 2 hot tubs, sand volleyball, a small playset, a basketball court, and game rooms with a pool, foosball, ping pong, etc. The most fun activity, however, is the creek. The creek offers opportunities for swimming, fishing, kayaking, and paddleboarding.

While there, we also ventured down to Blue Lotus Winery for a tasting. Blue Lotus offers a variety of mead wines and is only a 4-minute drive from Son’s Geronimo.

You can watch our Son’s Geronimo adventure here! We’ll be visiting a couple more of their properties as a part of our unique accommodations series, so make sure to subscribe to our channel and turn on notifications, so you don’t miss the next adventure!

48 Hours in OKC!

48 Hours in OKC!

48 Hours in OKC!

Our family has set a goal to visit all 50 states….eventually. 😊 Our first new state of the year was Oklahoma. It may be surprising that we’ve never visited this neighboring state, but it was definitely not a hop and a skip away from us. It was a 6.5-hour drive from Austin, most of which was spent driving through our ginormous home state.

We’ve also decided to make our travel more adventurous this year by staying in more unique accommodations. After searching for unique stays in OKC, we stumbled upon the Orr Family Farm, which features temperature-controlled 19th-century teepees and Conestoga wagons. While booking, we couldn’t decide which one we wanted to spend the weekend in, so we thought, why not try both! Curious about what it’s like to sleep in a teepee and wagon? Check out our tour of both of these unique dwellings on our YouTube channel.

Day 1

Our first stop in OKC was the wheeler district, where we got great pictures in front of the OKC sign and saw the huge Ferris wheel, which formerly belonged to the Santa Monica Pier. We then headed to the farm to get checked into our teepee before going to dinner at Pops 66. Pops 66 is a fun and vibrant restaurant that also includes a gas station and convenience store with tons of bottled soda! They seriously offer just about every flavor of bottled soda you could think of!

Day 2

We decided to start our second day by exploring the farm. We were one of only two families occupying the farm while we were there, and we truly enjoyed feeling as if we had the whole place to ourselves! We took full advantage of the fire pit right outside of our teepee and wagon and the s’more kits that the farm provided each day of our stay. Since we visited in January, the farm activities were closed to the public, but they were open for guests! We were amazed to have 15 plus fun farm activities at our disposal, including pedal cars, bouncy pads, an obstacle course, huge slides, a playground, and much more! The farm also provided animal feed each day which allowed us to feed the llamas, horses, donkeys, and goats.

Later that afternoon, we decided to venture off the farm and explore OKC. We were absolutely blown away by all there was to do! We first traveled to Scissortail Park to grab lunch at Spark and try their infamous pink fries. From there, we took a short 5-minute walk to the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Some of it was closed while we were in town, but we were able to stroll the outdoor grounds, and Kennedy had such a fun time at the garden playground. That evening, we headed down to Bricktown, a lively entertainment district filled with fun shops and restaurants. We took a tour of the area via a Bricktown Water Taxi while also receiving a brief OKC history lesson. We capped off our evening with a trip to Factory Obscura, a very unique immersive art exhibit just a short drive from Bricktown.

We really enjoyed exploring OKC! The city definitely offers something for everyone.

5 Fun Things in Buda & Kyle

5 Fun Things in Buda & Kyle

The greater Austin metro area includes some amazing neighborhoods full of kid-friendly amenities, such as the booming areas just south of Austin — Buda and Kyle! Our Do512 Family Field Expert Shenika Mays, of Mays Family Travels, shares her top 5 favorite things to do with her family in our southern suburbs…

— Stagecoach Park
Stagecoach Park is a beautiful Buda treasure that includes a playground, pond, hike and bike trail, amphitheater, pavilion, and tons of open space. The historic buildings and oak tree-lined trails also make it one of my family’s favorite locations for family photos! Many local events are held at the park every year including the Buda Trail of Lights hosted by the City of Buda each December.

Sweet Cakes 4 U
My family’s favorite place to treat ourselves in Buda is Sweet Cakes 4 U. They’ve been popularized for their variety of inventive cakes by the slice, but don’t miss the many other delicious treats they offer including cake balls, cupcakes, cookies, mini cheesecakes, and much more. Be sure to get there early! These delectable goodies can sell out quickly and you’ll often find customers lined up outside of the building as soon as they open, waiting to get their sweet fix. My favorite cake is any slice made with their signature moist chocolate cake.

EVO Entertainment
EVO is an entertainment center that offers something for everyone. It features a bowling alley, arcade, movie theatre, and Hardihoods Bar and Grill. In the summer, they host the Kidflix Summer Movie Clubhouse which is a 10 week series where recently released family-friendly movies are shown for only $1.

La Ola Pop Shop
Cool off on a warm day with gourmet made-from-scratch paletas or ice cream from La Ola Pop Shop in Kyle. Flavors range from fruit based to cookie based and are made all in house with fresh natural ingredients. La Ola Pop is located in Kohlers Crossing between Texican Café and Aviator Pizza which makes it the perfect place to stop after dinner. There’s also an open play area right out front with turf and large climbing rocks where kids can play while you wait for your food.

5 Mile Dam Park
Escape the Texas heat and take a dip into the Blanco River at 5 Mile Dam Park. 5 Mile Dam is located just outside of Kyle, in San Marcos. The shallow side of the river is the perfect place for toddlers to splish-splash while the top of the dam is deeper and great for swimming. Don’t forget your raft! The river rapids are a fun place to go tubing. Also, be sure to bring your cooler and a blanket. The grassy area in front of the river is an excellent place to have a family picnic with river views. In addition to the river, 5 Mile Dam also offers a 43 acre soccer complex, playscape, and pavilion. (Please note that like most of our area’s swimming holes, this does dry out if there is no recent rain. Keep that in mind when planning a visit.)
